A horsebox can look perfectly presentable on the yard and still be carrying a fault underneath. A dragging brake, a tired bearing or a corroded earth connection may not announce itself until the journey is under way - often with a horse on board and a timetable already in pieces. This guide to horsebox trailer maintenance focuses on the areas where faults develop, what the warning signs mean, and why proper inspection is worth far more than a quick look around.
Horseboxes have a harder life than many general-purpose trailers. They carry a live, shifting load, are frequently stood outside, and may cover relatively few miles between periods of inactivity. That combination is hard on brakes, tyres, electrics, floors and running gear. Mileage matters, but time, weather and storage conditions matter just as much.

The axle, suspension, hubs and wheel bearings do the unglamorous work. They are also the parts most likely to turn a minor neglected issue into an expensive recovery or a serious road safety problem. A horsebox that feels stable when empty can behave very differently once loaded, particularly if wear has developed unevenly across the running gear.
Wheel bearings can deteriorate through age, water ingress, incorrect adjustment or damaged seals. A rumbling noise, excessive heat around a hub after a run, wheel movement, or grease appearing where it should not be are all reasons to have the assembly examined. Heat is particularly telling. A hub that is noticeably hotter than the one on the other side may point to a bearing issue or a brake that is binding. Neither should be ignored.
Tyres deserve more attention than a quick glance at the tread. Trailer tyres often age out before they wear out. Sidewall cracking, flat spots from long periods parked up, cuts, bulges and uneven wear are all warning signs. Correct pressure is equally important, but the correct figure depends on the tyre specification, axle rating and actual loading. Guesswork is not a maintenance plan.
Suspension units, U-bolts, wheel studs and mudguards also need close inspection during a service. Damaged mudguards can foul a tyre, while loose fixings and tired suspension can affect stability. If a horsebox starts to bounce, pull, sit unevenly or feel less settled behind the tow vehicle, it needs looking at before the next outing.
Brakes are not a place for assumptions
Most horseboxes use overrun braking systems, and their condition has a direct bearing on stopping control. The coupling head compresses under braking, applying the trailer brakes through the linkage, cables and brake assemblies. Wear in any part of that chain can reduce braking performance or cause a brake to stay applied.
A heavy handbrake, poor holding on an incline, snatching, pulling to one side, unusual resistance when manoeuvring, or a hot wheel after towing can all point to brake trouble. Brake shoes can wear, cables can seize, linkages can corrode, and adjusters can fall out of effective range. A trailer that has been stored for months is especially vulnerable, as moisture and lack of movement can leave components sticking.
The breakaway cable should also be treated as a safety-critical item, not a bit of wire that merely hangs near the coupling. On a braked horsebox, it is designed to apply the trailer brakes if the trailer becomes detached. Fraying, kinks, corrosion, an unsuitable attachment point or a cable that has been allowed to drag on the road all need attention. It must be connected correctly for each journey, but its overall condition needs professional assessment as part of the braking system.
There is a trade-off here. Replacing only the visibly worn component may seem cheaper, but braking parts often wear as a system. If one cable is badly corroded, the others and the internal brake mechanisms may be in a similar state. A proper inspection establishes whether a targeted repair is sensible or whether a more complete brake overhaul will prevent the same problem returning shortly afterwards.
Coupling, jockey wheel and bodywork faults
The coupling is the connection between tow vehicle and horsebox. Excessive movement, difficulty locking onto the towball, a worn stabiliser, damaged bellows, corrosion or a failed damper can all affect the way the trailer behaves. If the coupling is noisy, rough in operation or reluctant to engage, it should not be forced and forgotten. It needs checking with the correct parts specified for that unit.
The jockey wheel has a less glamorous job, but a failed or bent unit makes hitching awkward and can lead to damage around the A-frame. Check for a cracked clamp, worn winding mechanism, bent tube or wheel that no longer turns freely. It is also worth having safety chains, breakaway fittings and A-frame hardware inspected at the same time. These are small components until they are not.
On the body itself, pay particular attention to the floor, ramp, hinges, fasteners and partitions. A solid-looking rubber mat can hide moisture and deterioration below, especially on older horseboxes or those regularly washed out. Soft areas, movement underfoot, staining, lifted edges or a musty smell should be investigated. The floor is not a cosmetic panel. It supports a horse that may move suddenly, shift weight heavily and stand in damp conditions.
Ramp springs and hinges deserve the same respect. A ramp that is becoming difficult to lift, drops too quickly, sits poorly when closed or shows cracking around its fixings needs prompt attention. A failing ramp is inconvenient at best and dangerous at worst.
Lighting and electrical faults are usually simple - until they are not
Lighting problems are often blamed on the tow vehicle, then the trailer, then the weather. In reality, poor connections, damaged cable, corroded plugs and weak earths are common culprits. Road spray and repeated coupling take their toll, particularly on sockets, plug pins and cables routed under the trailer.
Every required lamp needs to work reliably, including indicators, brake lights, tail lights, number plate illumination and reflectors. Intermittent faults are not harmless just because they appear to cure themselves. They tend to return in rain, darkness or on a rough road, which is exactly when they cause trouble.
Modern towing electrics can add another layer. Dedicated vehicle wiring and coded systems need to communicate correctly with the tow vehicle, while older connections may simply be worn or contaminated. A workshop can test both sides of the connection properly rather than replacing parts at random. That saves money and avoids the familiar ritual of borrowing another trailer plug and hoping for the best.
Servicing is about finding faults before they become journeys home on a recovery lorry
A professional horsebox service is not just a list of replacement parts. It is a chance to inspect braking performance, bearing condition, wheel and tyre health, coupling operation, lights, chassis condition, floor security and the general state of the trailer. The findings should make sense for the trailer's age, usage and storage, rather than applying the same answer to every horsebox.
For example, a frequently travelled competition horsebox may need attention because of mileage and brake wear. A lightly used box that spends winter outside may need it because cables, electrics and bearings have suffered from damp and inactivity. Both can look fine from ten feet away. Neither should be judged by appearance alone.
Parts compatibility matters too. Horsebox components are not interchangeable simply because they look similar in a photograph. Axle capacity, brake size, coupling type, wheel stud pattern and manufacturer specification all affect what will fit and work safely.
