Practical Guide to Trailer Brake Maintenance

A trailer that rolls freely around the yard can still have brakes that are not ready for the road. That is the trouble with trailer braking systems: wear happens gradually, faults hide behind hubs and drums, and the first obvious warning can arrive when there is a horsebox, plant trailer or loaded flatbed behind you. This guide to trailer brake maintenance explains what needs watching, why professional inspection matters, and when a trailer should stay parked until it has been checked.

Why trailer brakes deserve proper attention

Most braked trailers in the UK use an overrun braking system. When the tow vehicle slows, the trailer pushes into the coupling, operating a linkage that applies the brakes at the wheels. It is simple in principle, but it relies on several moving parts doing their job together: the hitch damper, brake rod, compensator, cables, expander mechanisms, shoes, drums and wheel bearings.

One worn or seized component can affect the whole system. A stretched cable may leave one brake dragging while another barely applies. A weak damper can make the trailer lurch under braking. Contamination from a failed hub seal can ruin otherwise serviceable brake shoes. It is not a case of fitting the nearest-looking part and hoping for the best.

The consequences are more than an uncomfortable tow. Poor trailer braking can increase stopping distances, cause instability, overheat hubs, wear tyres unevenly and place unnecessary strain on the towing vehicle. For commercial users, agricultural operators and anyone carrying horses, that is a risk not worth normalising.

Guide to trailer brake maintenance: faults that should not wait

A good brake system usually gives few dramas. It should apply progressively, release fully and allow the trailer to track straight when slowing down. When it does not, pay attention. Trailers are not known for complaining loudly until they have a proper reason.

A knock or sharp clunk when braking may point to excessive movement in the overrun coupling, a tired damper or wear in the drawbar assembly. It can also be caused by slack in the brake linkage, but that diagnosis needs more than a quick look in the driveway.

A trailer that feels as though it is pulling to one side under braking can have uneven brake adjustment, seized cables, damaged shoes or a wheel-end issue. Likewise, a wheel that runs noticeably hotter than the others after a journey can indicate a dragging brake or bearing fault. Do not assume it will free itself with another run. Heat is a warning, not a bedding-in process.

Other signs worth acting on include a handbrake that travels too far before holding, a brake lever that will not release cleanly, squealing or grinding from a hub, and a trailer that seems to resist being pushed by hand on level ground. Any smell of hot linings after normal use also deserves investigation.

The obvious temptation is to tighten the adjustment. Sometimes adjustment is needed, but it is not a cure for worn shoes, corroded cables, damaged drums or seized mechanisms. Tightening a faulty system can make a dragging brake worse and may mask the real cause for a short while.

What a proper brake inspection looks for

Brake maintenance is best treated as part of a full trailer service, not a once-over before the annual holiday or the first day of lambing. A competent workshop inspection starts with the complete system rather than one visible component.

The overrun coupling should be checked for smooth travel, excessive play and damper condition. The breakaway cable must be correctly fitted, undamaged and suitable for the coupling arrangement. It is there to apply the trailer brakes if the trailer separates from the vehicle, so it is not an optional bit of wire to loop wherever it happens to fit.

Underneath, the brake rods, equaliser and cable runs need inspecting for corrosion, bends, wear and free movement. Cables can look acceptable externally while binding internally. On trailers that spend time in fields, on salted roads or standing through wet winters, corrosion is especially common.

At each wheel, a proper inspection means removing the hub or drum as required to assess the brake shoes, linings, springs, expander and drum surface. Shoes can be worn thin, glazed, contaminated or detached from their lining. Drums can become scored or distorted through overheating. Springs lose tension and mechanisms seize. None of these faults can be judged accurately by looking at the outside of the wheel.

Bearings and seals are part of the conversation too. A failed seal can allow grease into the brake drum, reducing braking performance and contaminating the linings. Bearing wear can create movement at the wheel and, left unchecked, damage hubs, stubs and other components that are considerably less pleasant to pay for.

Service intervals depend on use, not just mileage

There is no single interval that suits every trailer. A lightly used domestic box trailer stored under cover has a very different working life from an Ifor Williams livestock trailer used weekly, a car transporter running motorway miles, or an equestrian trailer that carries valuable passengers over mixed roads.

As a sensible working approach, a braked trailer should be professionally inspected at least annually and before any period of heavy use. Frequent users may need servicing more often, particularly where the trailer covers high mileage, carries near its plated capacity or works in demanding conditions.

Time standing still can be as hard on brakes as mileage. Cables corrode, drums collect moisture, linkages stiffen and handbrake mechanisms seize when a trailer is left unused for months. A trailer that has been parked since last season is not automatically ready because its tyres still hold air.

Operating conditions should also shape the decision. Mud, slurry, coastal air, winter salt and regular pressure washing all accelerate corrosion. Repeated short journeys with heavy loads generate heat without necessarily giving the system a long, clean run. That is why agricultural, trade and equestrian trailers benefit from a service schedule based on real use rather than guesswork.

Parts must match the trailer and axle

Brake components are not universal, even where two parts appear similar on the bench. Shoe dimensions, drum sizes, cable lengths, hub patterns, axle ratings and coupling arrangements vary between manufacturers and trailer models. Using the wrong component can create adjustment problems, poor braking or fitment that simply is not safe.

This matters particularly with branded trailers and older models, where parts may have changed over production years. If the trailer uses AL-KO equipment, for example, correct identification of the axle and brake assembly is essential before ordering shoes, cables, drums or a coupling damper. The same applies to Indespension, Brian James, Ifor Williams and other established makes.

A workshop or specialist supplier can identify suitable parts from the trailer details and existing component markings. Clear photographs can help, but measurements and axle information are often needed to avoid an expensive near miss. The cheapest brake part is not cheap if it needs removing again next week.

Do not overlook the handbrake and breakaway system

The handbrake is often used less than the service brakes, which is exactly why it gets ignored. It should hold the trailer securely on a suitable slope, release without excessive force and operate both sides evenly. A handbrake that only just holds an empty trailer may be nowhere near adequate when the trailer is loaded.

The breakaway cable also needs checking whenever the trailer is serviced or coupled up. It should not be frayed, kinked, excessively long or wrapped around the jockey wheel. Its route and attachment point must allow it to do its job if separation occurs, without applying the brakes during normal tight turns.

These are small items with large consequences. Replacing a tired cable or addressing a stiff handbrake mechanism is considerably easier than dealing with a runaway trailer.

When a professional repair is the sensible option

Some owners are confident with routine checks, but brake repair is not the place for assumptions. A professional service provides the benefit of safe lifting equipment, correct adjustment, component identification and an experienced eye for wear that is not immediately obvious.

It also allows the braking system to be assessed alongside wheel bearings, hubs, tyres, suspension, lights and coupling condition. Those systems meet at the wheel end and drawbar, so treating them as separate jobs can miss the cause of a problem. A dragging brake may be linked to bearing damage; a braking complaint may reveal a worn coupling damper.
