LED vs Bulb Trailer Lights: The Real Difference

A trailer light that works perfectly on the drive but disappears in spray, darkness or a wet Welsh lay-by is not a small annoyance. It is a safety fault waiting to be noticed by the wrong person. The LED vs bulb trailer lights question matters because lighting is one of the few parts of a trailer that every other road user relies on - whether you are towing a horsebox, flatbed, car transporter, livestock trailer or a small domestic trailer.

Both systems can be roadworthy, reliable and suitable for the job. The better choice depends on the trailer’s use, the condition of its wiring, the towing vehicle and whether a quick bulb replacement or long-term durability matters most. The lamp itself is only one part of the circuit. Connectors, earth points, cable runs and water ingress are usually where the real fun begins.

LED vs bulb trailer lights: the main difference

Traditional trailer lamps use filament bulbs. When current passes through the filament, it heats up and produces light. It is simple, inexpensive technology, and a failed bulb can often be replaced without changing the complete lamp.

LED lamps use light-emitting diodes instead. They draw less electrical current, produce very little heat and generally last far longer than a filament bulb. Most modern LED rear lamps are sealed units containing the LEDs, circuit board and, in many cases, the electronic driver that controls them.

That construction creates the key trade-off. A conventional lamp may only need a new bulb and perhaps a lens. With a sealed LED lamp, an internal failure often means replacing the full unit. That is not necessarily a bad bargain, particularly on a trailer that sees regular work, but it is worth knowing before choosing one system over the other.

Why LEDs suit hard-working trailers

For trailers that spend their lives outside, travel long distances or work in rough conditions, LED lighting has some clear advantages. There is no fragile filament to break when the trailer bounces across a yard, field entrance or less-than-perfect lane. That makes LEDs especially useful on agricultural trailers, plant trailers and commercial setups that see regular vibration.

Their low current draw also reduces demand on the trailer circuit. On a properly wired trailer, that can be helpful where several lamps are operating together, including marker lights, number plate lamps and interior lighting. LEDs reach full brightness immediately too, which gives following traffic a cleaner, more defined brake-light signal.

Good-quality LED units are commonly sealed against moisture and dust. This is a serious benefit, not a marketing flourish. Water inside a lamp causes corrosion, poor connections and blown bulbs. A decent sealed lamp removes one common place for rainwater and road spray to cause trouble.

LEDs can also make a trailer easier to see. Their light tends to be crisp and even, particularly in combined rear lamps with clear indicators, stop lamps, tail lamps, reflectors and reversing functions. On a horsebox or car transporter used after dark, that improved definition is worth having.

None of this means every LED lamp is equal. Cheap, poorly sealed units can still let in water, suffer circuit-board failures or fade before their time. A recognisable, correctly approved lamp is usually money better spent than the bargain option that requires replacing again next season. Trailer parts are rarely a good place for wishful thinking.

The downside of sealed LED lamps

The main drawback is repairability. If one function fails inside a sealed LED lamp, there is often no replaceable bulb to fit. The complete lamp may need changing. On some trailers this is straightforward; on others, particularly older trailers with awkward mounting brackets or tired wiring, the lamp replacement can expose a separate connection problem.

An LED lamp can also appear to be faulty when the actual issue is elsewhere. A corroded plug pin, weak earth, damaged cable behind a mudguard or poor joint can stop an LED unit working properly. Because LEDs use so little current, they can be less forgiving of an unstable earth or voltage drop than an old filament lamp which has been muddling through.

Where bulb trailer lights still make sense

Filament bulb lighting is not obsolete just because LEDs are common. It remains a practical option for older trailers that were designed around traditional lamp bodies, particularly where maintaining original fitment is important. A replacement bulb is inexpensive, widely understood and can be kept as a spare in the towing vehicle.

There is also a useful degree of fault isolation. If a tail light or indicator stops working, the bulb may be the only failed component. Replacing a bulb is cheaper than fitting a complete lamp assembly, assuming the holder, lens, terminals and wiring are sound.

For a lightly used trailer stored under cover, conventional lamps can provide years of perfectly acceptable service. The issue is not that bulb lights are inherently poor. They simply have more serviceable parts and more opportunities for water, corrosion and vibration to cause a fault.

Bulbs also run hotter than LEDs. Heat can discolour lenses over time, affect plastic lamp bodies and contribute to failure where moisture has entered the fitting. Rough ground and potholes are no friend to a delicate filament either. If you regularly tow over farm tracks or carry valuable livestock, the convenience of replacing bulbs can soon be outweighed by replacing them repeatedly.

The cost is not just the purchase price

A bulb lamp normally costs less at the outset, and a replacement bulb costs very little. LED lamps cost more initially but can be more economical over the working life of the trailer, particularly where downtime matters. A failed light before an early start, delivery or show is never conveniently timed.

The sensible comparison is not simply bulb price versus LED lamp price. Consider how often the trailer is used, where it is parked, how much vibration it sees and what a lighting failure costs in lost time. A domestic box trailer used a handful of times each year has different needs from an Ifor Williams horsebox travelling weekly or a plant trailer earning its keep six days a week.

Compatibility with modern towing vehicles

Modern vehicles often monitor trailer lighting through the dedicated towbar wiring system. They may identify a failed lamp by measuring electrical load. Because LED lights draw far less current than filament bulbs, some vehicles can mistake a working LED lamp for a failed bulb and display a warning message or make an indicator flash rapidly.

This does not mean LED lights are unsuitable for modern vehicles. It means the trailer lighting and vehicle electrics need to be compatible. Approved LED lamps designed for trailer use, correctly coded vehicle electrics and suitable dedicated wiring are the right starting point. Random resistors added to hide a warning can create heat and introduce another potential failure point, so this is not an area for shortcuts.

The same applies when converting an older trailer from bulbs to LEDs. The physical fit may look simple, but the electrical system still needs assessing. A professional inspection can identify weak earths, damaged cable, incorrect connectors and unsuitable lamp functions before they become repeated roadside faults.

Brightness is useful, glare is not

A good trailer lamp must be visible at the correct distance and angle without dazzling other road users. More brightness is not automatically better. Lamps need the correct functions, approved markings and positioning for the trailer. Indicators must be amber, rear fog lamps must be fitted and positioned correctly where required, and reflectors are not optional decorations.

This is another reason to avoid mixing random lamps, lenses and wiring alterations. A trailer can look well lit while still having the wrong function, poor beam pattern or unreliable connection. On the road, especially in heavy rain or on unlit rural routes, consistency matters more than flashy lighting.

The fault may not be the lamp

When several lights fail together, the lamps are rarely the first suspect. A plug with green corrosion, a damaged 7-pin or 13-pin connector, a poor chassis earth or a cable crushed near the axle can affect multiple functions. Intermittent lights that work when the trailer is stationary but fail once moving are a classic sign of a wiring or connection issue.

Water ingress deserves particular attention. It can enter through a cracked lens, cable gland, joiner or plug, then travel along copper strands inside the cable. The visible problem at the rear lamp may be some distance from the actual cause. Replacing bulbs or lamps without checking the circuit can turn into an expensive game of trailer-light whack-a-mole.

Which option is right for your trailer?

LED lighting is generally the stronger choice for frequently used trailers, outdoor storage, demanding work and owners who want fewer bulb failures. It is particularly well suited to newer trailers and professionally maintained towing setups where wiring condition and vehicle compatibility are known.

Bulb lamps remain a sensible, cost-effective choice for older or lightly used trailers, provided the lamp bodies, lenses and connections are in good condition. They are also practical where original-style replacement parts are required and a simple, serviceable system is preferred.

Whichever system is fitted, treat a lighting fault as a reason to have the trailer looked over rather than merely a reason to buy another bulb. The best trailer lights are the ones that remain visible, correctly connected and dependable when the weather is miserable and the journey still has to be made.
