A hot hub, a sharp burning smell at a lay-by, or a trailer that feels as though it is holding the tow vehicle back are not minor annoyances. They are classic signs of brakes failing to release properly. If you are asking, why are trailer brakes binding, the short answer is that something in the braking system is sticking, seized, incorrectly adjusted or unable to return to its resting position.
Binding brakes can quickly turn a straightforward repair into damaged drums, worn shoes, ruined bearings, overheated tyres or a trailer that is unsafe to tow. It is not a fault to drive through until the next convenient weekend. Park it up, let it cool naturally and arrange for the trailer to be inspected.
Why trailer brakes bind in the first place
Most braked trailers use an overrun braking system. When the tow vehicle slows, the trailer pushes forward against the coupling. That movement applies the brakes through a linkage, cables and brake assemblies inside each drum. Once the tow vehicle pulls away, the system should return freely and the brake shoes should release from the drum.
For that to happen, every moving part needs to move as intended. A little corrosion, a damaged cable, a seized expander or a tired coupling damper can stop that return movement. Trailers often spend long periods standing outside, then are asked to work hard carrying livestock, plant, cars or horses. That is exactly the sort of use that exposes neglected brake components.
The cause is not always the same on every axle or every trailer. A single hot wheel points towards a local fault at that corner, while heat across both wheels on one axle can indicate a cable, linkage or adjustment issue. A professional inspection is needed to separate a brake fault from a bearing or hub problem that feels similar from the driver’s seat.
Seized brake cables and corroded linkages
Brake cables are one of the most common causes of binding on drum-braked trailers. Water and dirt find their way past damaged cable outer sleeves, corrosion develops inside, and the inner cable no longer slides freely. It may apply the brake but fail to release it fully.
The same applies to compensators, equaliser mechanisms, rods and pivots beneath the trailer. These parts sit directly in the firing line for road spray, mud, farm tracks and winter salt. A stiff pivot can leave one brake partially on even when the handbrake lever appears to be down.
A cable that has begun to seize is not something to ignore because it still moves a little. It can worsen rapidly once heat builds up, and a cable that binds intermittently is particularly awkward. The trailer may seem fine unloaded, then drag badly after several miles or when carrying weight.
Sticking brake shoes, expanders and return springs
Inside a brake drum, the shoes must move out to grip the drum and then retract cleanly. Corrosion around the expander mechanism, worn pivot points or weak and damaged return springs can prevent that happening.
Brake shoes can also stick after a trailer has stood for a long time, particularly in damp conditions. Surface corrosion forms between the shoe lining and drum, and the first movement can damage the lining or leave components dragging. Oil or grease contamination from a failed hub seal can cause different problems too, including unpredictable braking performance and damaged friction material.
The important point is that brake drums do not reveal their condition from the outside. Removing the drum and assessing the shoes, springs, expander and bearing condition is workshop work, not guesswork based on a noisy wheel or a hot smell.
Incorrect adjustment can keep brakes working when they should not
Trailer brakes need correct adjustment to give controlled braking without constant contact between the shoes and drums. If adjustment is too tight, the shoes can rub even with the braking system released. That friction creates heat, heat expands components, and the brakes can bind more severely as the journey continues.
Adjustment is not simply about tightening everything until the trailer feels sharp on the handbrake. It needs to suit the brake assembly, the linkage and the condition of the components. Over-adjustment can mask worn parts for a short time, but it does not make them serviceable.
Overrun coupling and handbrake faults
The overrun coupling at the front of a trailer is another key area. Its sliding shaft needs to move freely, while the damper controls the motion as the trailer pushes against the vehicle during braking. If the coupling is stiff, damaged or not returning correctly, it can keep tension in the brake linkage.
A faulty damper does not always mean the brakes are binding, but it can make braking harsh, delayed or uneven. It may also leave the coupling movement feeling wrong when manoeuvring. These faults need proper diagnosis because coupling parts, brake cables and brake adjustments all work together.
The handbrake mechanism deserves the same attention. A handbrake lever that does not fully release, worn linkage components or a seized ratchet mechanism can hold the brakes on. It is tempting to blame the handbrake after one wheel gets hot, but a workshop will check the entire system rather than replacing parts at random.
Bearings, hubs and brakes can produce similar warnings
Not every hot wheel is a binding brake. A worn, overtightened or failing bearing can produce heat, noise and resistance. A damaged hub, loose wheel or tyre issue may also be felt through the trailer long before the exact fault is obvious.
That is why a proper inspection matters. A technician can assess drum condition, bearing adjustment, grease seals, brake operation and hub temperatures together. Replacing brake components when the root cause is a bearing fault wastes money and leaves the real safety issue unresolved.
Equally, treating a binding brake as only a bearing issue can lead to scorched shoes, damaged drums and further stress on the hub assembly. One fault can cause another, especially after a long tow with a loaded trailer.
Signs that need prompt attention
Binding brakes often announce themselves before they fail completely. The trailer may pull to one side under braking, feel reluctant to roll, or seem to make the tow vehicle work harder than normal. You may notice a burning smell, smoke from a wheel, a hot hub, squealing, grinding or a marked difference in temperature between wheels after a journey.
Other warning signs are a handbrake that feels unusually stiff, an overrun coupling that does not return smoothly, or brakes that lock too easily after the trailer has been standing. Do not touch a potentially overheated drum or hub with bare hands. Heat can be extreme, and pouring water over hot brake components can cause further damage.
If a wheel is smoking, the tyre is overheating or the trailer is dragging heavily, do not continue the journey. Stop somewhere safe, keep clear of traffic and arrange recovery or professional assistance. A hot brake can affect tyre integrity and, in serious cases, become a fire risk.
Why regular servicing prevents expensive brake problems
Trailer brake systems rarely fail without warning, but the warning is often hidden underneath the trailer. Routine servicing gives a technician the chance to inspect cables, brake shoes, drums, expanders, hubs, bearings, couplings and breakaway equipment before a seized component ruins a journey.
Service intervals depend on the trailer’s use. A lightly used domestic trailer kept under cover will not face the same conditions as a horsebox, car transporter or agricultural trailer used year-round on wet roads and muddy yards. Long periods of standing can be as hard on brakes as frequent heavy work, so low mileage is not a guarantee that everything is healthy.
Using the correct replacement parts also matters. Brake assemblies, cables, drums, bearings and coupling components must match the axle and trailer specification. Brand-specific fitment is particularly relevant for established makes such as Ifor Williams, Indespension, Brian James and AL-KO-equipped trailers. Close enough is not a sensible standard where braking is concerned.
