A trailer wheel bearing rarely fails at a convenient time. It usually makes itself known on the way to a show, halfway through a farm run, or with a loaded car transporter behind you. Knowing when should trailer bearings be replaced is less about waiting for a fixed mileage figure and more about recognising wear, water ingress, heat and the way the trailer has been used.
Bearings carry the load at every turn of the wheel. If they deteriorate, the consequences can go far beyond an irritating rumble: damaged hubs, scored stub axles, brake contamination, a wheel that develops excessive movement, or, in the worst cases, wheel loss. That is why bearing condition belongs firmly on the servicing list, rather than the list of jobs to leave until something starts making a noise.
When should trailer bearings be replaced?
Trailer bearings should be replaced when they show signs of wear, damage, corrosion, contamination or excessive play. They may also need replacement following a bearing failure, overheating incident, prolonged water exposure, or damage to the hub or grease seal.
There is no honest one-size-fits-all replacement interval. A lightly used domestic trailer kept dry in a garage will not ask the same of its bearings as a horsebox, plant trailer, livestock trailer or commercial flatbed working every week. Load, speed, journey length, storage conditions and maintenance history all matter.
A trailer that has sat unused for long periods is not automatically exempt. Grease can deteriorate, seals can harden and moisture can find its way in while it is parked. A trailer is not like a good bottle of whisky - leaving it alone does not necessarily improve it.
For most owners, the sensible approach is to have the bearings professionally assessed as part of routine trailer servicing and replace them when their condition says it is time. If the trailer’s service record is unknown, particularly on a used purchase, an inspection is worthwhile before relying on it for regular towing.
Warning signs that bearing replacement may be due
A low rumble, grinding sound or droning noise that rises with road speed is a familiar warning sign. It can be difficult to isolate from the driver’s seat, especially with an empty trailer, road noise and a tow vehicle doing its best to hide the problem. Even so, any new wheel-end noise deserves attention rather than a hopeful turn of the radio volume knob.
Excessive wheel movement is another concern. A wheel should not feel loose or unstable. Play can point to a worn bearing, incorrect adjustment, a damaged hub or another issue around the wheel assembly. It needs diagnosing properly because fitting parts without identifying the underlying fault can turn a straightforward repair into a more expensive one.
Heat is particularly telling. After a journey, one hub that is noticeably hotter than the others may indicate friction inside the bearing assembly, although a binding brake can produce a similar symptom. Either way, it is not normal. A hub that has become hot enough to smell, discolour grease or damage a grease cap needs urgent professional attention.
Visible grease leakage around the hub, inner wheel area or brake components can mean that a seal has failed. Once the seal stops doing its job, water, grit and dirt can enter the bearing. On braked trailers, escaping grease can also reach the brake shoes or drums, reducing braking performance. Replacing only the bearing while ignoring a damaged seal, contaminated brakes or a worn running surface is false economy.
Vibration, uneven tyre wear and a wheel that does not run true are also reasons to book the trailer in. These symptoms are not exclusive to bearings. They can be linked to tyre damage, wheel balance, a bent wheel, suspension faults, axle damage or loose fixings. That is precisely why a workshop inspection is preferable to guessing.
Water and heavy work shorten bearing life
Water is one of the most common enemies of trailer bearings. Launching a boat trailer, crossing flooded ground, regular pressure washing around hubs, or storing a trailer outside through a wet Welsh winter can all compromise seals and introduce moisture. Water displaces grease and starts corrosion on bearing surfaces that need to remain smooth and precisely matched.
Agricultural and rural trailers also live a harder life than their mileage alone suggests. Mud, dust, uneven tracks, repeated loading and long periods carrying heavy equipment place sustained strain on hubs and axles. The same applies to car transporters, builders’ trailers and horseboxes. A bearing might cover relatively few miles, but it may spend those miles carrying a serious load.
Horsebox owners should be particularly cautious before longer journeys. A loaded horsebox is not the place to discover that one wheel bearing was already running rough. The welfare of the horse, the stability of the trailer and the safety of everyone around it depend on sound running gear, tyres, brakes and couplings.
Why mileage alone is not enough
Vehicle servicing often relies on mileage and time intervals, but trailers are used too differently for mileage to tell the full story. One trailer may travel 2,000 motorway miles a year with a moderate load. Another may cover a fraction of that distance on potholed lanes, through gateways and across yards with concentrated loads. The second trailer may need attention sooner.
Bearing life is also affected by correct installation, compatible parts and the condition of related components. The wrong bearing, an unsuitable seal, damage to the hub bore or a worn stub axle can prevent a new assembly from lasting as it should. Brand and axle specification matter, especially on trailers from manufacturers such as Ifor Williams, Indespension, Brian James and units fitted with AL-KO running gear.
This is not a category where “looks about right” is a useful specification. Bearings can appear similar while differing in size, load rating, sealing arrangement and hub compatibility. Accurate identification protects both the repair and the trailer.
A bearing problem can affect more than the hub
A failed bearing can damage the hub and stub axle as it breaks up or overheats. In some cases, the repair is no longer a bearing kit and a seal. It can involve a hub replacement, brake inspection, new brake components or more substantial axle work. Acting on early symptoms is usually cheaper than recovering a disabled trailer from the roadside.
Braked trailers bring another consideration. Excess movement at the hub can affect brake performance, while grease contamination can make brake linings ineffective. If one side has suffered a bearing issue, the opposite side should not simply be assumed healthy. A professional service can assess the whole axle area, including brake condition, cables, drums, hubs and wheel fixings.
It is also worth remembering that a bearing fault may have a cause rather than simply being old. Overloading, impact damage, unsuitable wheels, water ingress and incorrect previous work can all contribute. Replacing the failed component without addressing the cause leaves the new part facing the same problem.
Professional inspection beats roadside diagnosis
A competent trailer technician can check bearing condition in context, rather than treating the noise or movement in isolation. The inspection can establish whether the bearing is worn, whether the hub is reusable, whether seals have failed and whether brake parts have been affected. It also confirms that the replacement parts suit the particular axle and trailer application.
This matters for owners who rely on their trailers for work. A plant trailer, flatbed or livestock trailer off the road costs time as well as money. For occasional users, it matters just as much because infrequent use can hide deterioration until the trailer is loaded and needed. The safest time to find a bearing issue is in a workshop, not on the hard shoulder.
